Rclone Transfer Worker

rclone 1.75.1 on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, set up as a transfer worker. A daily timer copies a folder on the instance to a destination, skipping files that have not changed, and a companion script compares checksums. The destination starts as a local folder, and you can point it at your own Amazon S3 bucket. This page covers what is on the image, its defaults and how billing works.

What is on the image

  • rclone 1.75.1, the official Linux binary, at /usr/local/bin/rclone, with its manual page.
  • A daily copy timer, rclone-copy.timer, that runs rclone-copy.service as the unprivileged rclone user.
  • Scripts in /opt/sushi/bin: rclone-copy.sh copies, and rclone-check.sh compares checksums.
  • First-boot setup that writes /etc/rclone/rclone.conf and /etc/rclone/rclone.env with a local destination. They contain no access keys.
  • A walkthrough script, /opt/sushi/docs/demo.sh.

Defaults

Setting Default
Source /var/lib/rclone/include
Destination /var/lib/rclone/destination, through the localdest remote
Operation rclone copy --checksum. Never sync: nothing is deleted on the destination.
Schedule Daily, with a random delay of up to 15 minutes; each run stops after 1 hour
Network ports None. rclone does not listen on any port.
AWS access None until you point the destination at your own S3 bucket

t3.medium with an encrypted gp3 root volume of at least 16 GiB and at least 2 GiB of memory. Size the volume for the source, a second copy and the cache if the destination stays local. No inbound security group rules are needed: you connect with AWS Systems Manager Session Manager.

Billing

You pay an hourly software fee while the instance runs, as shown in the offer terms on the listing. AWS bills EC2, EBS and data transfer separately, and S3 storage and requests if you copy to S3.
