Frequently asked questions

What do I need to bring?

An API key from a model provider, such as Anthropic or OpenAI. Hermes uses it for every reply, and the provider bills you directly. Messaging apps are optional.

Does my data leave the instance?

Your conversations go to the model provider you chose, and to any messaging app you connected. Workflows reach the services you build them to reach. Nothing is sent to Software Sushi. See Security and data.

Can Hermes change or delete my workflows?

Hermes can edit the workflows it created, and those you allow with Available in MCP. It can archive a workflow, which hides it from your list, but it can never permanently delete one. See Let Hermes build workflows.

Can I turn off Hermes's access to n8n?

Yes, each connection separately, and nothing switches it back on behind your back. Switch off Enable MCP access in n8n's Settings, Instance-level MCP to stop the workflow builder; Ask Hermes and Hermes tools keep working. sudo hermes-n8n status shows what is switched off and how to turn it back on.

Can outside services trigger my workflows?

Yes. n8n has a public HTTPS address, so webhooks, app triggers and public forms work once you publish the workflow, at https://<public-ip>/webhook/.... The address changes if you stop and start the instance, unless you attach an Elastic IP. See The n8n dashboard.

Can I keep n8n off the internet?

Yes: sudo hermes-n8n web off closes the dashboard, and you open n8n through an encrypted SSH tunnel instead. Hermes keeps working either way, but webhooks from outside services stop. See Keep n8n off the internet.

Can I use my own domain name?

Not built in: the dashboard's certificate is for your instance's IP address. To use your own domain, turn the dashboard off with sudo hermes-n8n web off, and put n8n behind a load balancer or reverse proxy that holds your certificate.

Can I use Python in n8n's Code node?

Not in this version: the Code node runs JavaScript.

Which instance size should I use?

t3.large or larger. Hermes and n8n run side by side and need the memory.

How do I move to a newer version?

n8n upgrades in place with sudo hermes-n8n upgrade. For a newer Hermes, launch the newer version of the image, restore a hermes-n8n backup onto it, and copy across /home/ubuntu/.hermes. See Backups and upgrades.

How do I stop paying for it?

Stop the instance when you are not using it, and start it again later. A stopped instance is not charged for compute or software, only for its disk, and for an Elastic IP if you attached one. When you are finished for good, terminate it, then cancel the subscription in AWS Marketplace.

Is this an official Nous Research or n8n product?

No. Software Sushi packages Hermes Agent, developed by Nous Research, and n8n, developed by n8n GmbH, for AWS. Both projects belong to their authors.
