Aider AI Pair Programmer is an Ubuntu 24.04 AMI with Aider, the AI pair programmer for your terminal. You describe a change in plain English, and Aider edits the right files in your git repository and commits each change so you can review or undo it. The instance is a private cloud workstation: you connect with Session Manager, bring your own model provider key, and start every Aider session yourself.

What is included

Component Details
Operating system Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, x86_64
Aider 0.86.2, installed as the Software Sushi build 0.86.2+sushi.2 in its own Python 3.12 environment at /opt/aider/venv
Command /usr/local/bin/aider
Workspace A git repository at /var/lib/aider/workspace, created on first boot with a small sample file, hello.py
Defaults /etc/aider/aider.conf.yml, created on first boot
Self-checks A walkthrough at /opt/sushi/docs/demo.sh and a self-test at /opt/sushi/bin/smoke.sh. Neither calls a paid model.

The +sushi.2 build keeps Aider's application code unchanged except for one fix: it updates Aider's list of model-library errors so the first chat does not crash, and it pins newer versions of Python dependencies. The Aider source archive and license are kept under /usr/share/doc/aider.

There is no web UI, no chat bot and no background Aider service. No model, model credits or provider keys are included: you bring your own.

Ports

Aider does not listen on any port. You do not need any inbound security group rule. The instance needs outbound HTTPS for Session Manager and for your model provider.

  • t3.medium (2 vCPU, 4 GiB RAM). Aider needs at least 4 GiB RAM.
  • At least 16 GiB encrypted gp3 root volume.
  • IMDSv2.

Billing

You pay an hourly software fee for each running instance, shown on the AWS Marketplace listing. AWS bills EC2, EBS and data transfer separately. Your model provider bills its own usage.

Where to go next

  • Getting started: launch, connect, run the walkthrough and make your first change with Aider.
  • Configuration: provider keys, models, the defaults file and your own repositories.
  • Operations: security model, updates, backups and support.
  • Troubleshooting: common problems and fixes.

Upstream project

Aider is written by Paul Gauthier and contributors and published under the Apache-2.0 license. Software Sushi packages it independently and does not claim upstream endorsement.
